"The Broken Down Nags"
                               Broomcorn Festival Parade 2003

When Connie (aka Slim), better known as our "Parade Chairperson", broke her wrist this summer, we knew there would be no riding in the annual parade. Plus, Lianne had parent duties. (My husband was thrilled; instead of spending the entire parade day just preparing for the event, we would have the whole day to enjoy my sister's visit.) The day before the parade I bumped into a friend who, upon learning that we 3 Greenhorns would NOT be riding as usual, lamented that "she always looked forward to what we'd be wearing in the parade". Pondering upon that comment, I realized that we were more like a group of broken-down nags.........which is how we joined the parade. Connie already had her cast, so we added a few more braces, gauze rolls, hospital gowns, etc. Regretfully, Lianne didn't make it in time for the parade (or did she intentionally stall?), so Slim and I enlisted my sister to fill in; she's the only one whose legs are as skinny as Lianne's!

It was the least amount of time and money ever spent on one of our parade jaunts. It almost hurt when we repeatedly heard that it was perhaps our best showing yet!

Some of my favorite comments heard DURING the parade:"Who are those people?" "Those horses don't look like nags to me!"

And AFTER the parade: "Oh, we just knew it was you girls!" Oh, dear!!!! Also meaning, Maureen's skinny legs were a perfect stand-in for Lianne's.
