I've been making newspapers for years, starting with what I dubbed "The Hard Times," a two-page newspaper chronicling what happened in our household. I charged a nickel or a dime for a copy. I'm sure I spent more than that in White-Out while I painstakingly typed on my all-caps plastic typewriter that I got from Grandma and Grandpa for Christmas one year. Later, Mom got an electric typewriter -- my introduction to electronically produced journalism (complete with lower case letters!).

Back in my roving reporter days, I was such a famous journalist, even then-Gov. Jim Edgar begged me for an autograph, as shown above. Well, maybe not, but I did interview him a few times.
I graduated from EIU in May 1997 with a degree in journalism. I started working at the Times-Courier/Journal Gazette in March 1995. I worked as a reporter for five years, where my duties included covering EIU and area school boards and city councils, as well as writing an occasional feature story.

In May 2000, better hours lured me to become a page designer/features writer. I was also in charge of the entertainment pages, business pages, farm page and the Web site. Occassionally, I wrote a feature or two, but as new duties were added to my plate, my writing time dwindled.

In December 2004, I sang a Johnny Paycheck song to the newspapers! Why? Because in January 2005, I am to start a new job as a public relations writer for EIU. I very much look forward to the challenges awaiting me in my new endeavor. See, I sound like a PR person already, don't I? :)
